ShijiaZhuang Railway Institute was founded in 1950 (originally named Railway Guard Engineering Institute, one of the key institutes in the nation as well as the whole army). In 1984, it was merged into Railway Ministry and renamed as the present one, and replaced to Hebei province in 2000, still among the leading universities in Hebei province.

The institute is a prestigious university of applied engineering science as well as the specialties for Arts Science, Economy, Management, Law and Education. It has formed a closed educational system, including postgraduate students, undergraduates, specialty students and the adult education. More than 40,000 students, famous academies and experts in engineering technology and advanced management have been cultivated.

The institute has been enrolling students from the whole country. Now the institute consists of ?11 schools：civil engineering, mechanical engineering, economic management, humanity, transportation engineering, architecture and arts design, material science and engineering, electronic engineering, vocational technology, postgraduate and adult education; 5 departments: computer, mechanics engineering, maths and physics, foreign languages, communications engineering; one basic courses teaching department: physical education. Whilst one self-governed school was established: Sifang branch. The institute boasts of 14 research institutes: national defence traffic, Structural Health Monitoring and Control, Rock-earth and Structural Engineering, Trasportation environment and security engineering, and so on; 2 provincial key experiment centers: ?Rock-earth and Structural, Structural Health Monitoring. 3 provincial key subjects: Road and Railway Engineering, Bridge and Tunnel Engineering, Transport Tools Application Engineering. There are 38 bachelor degree majors, covering 7 subject classes. It offers 1 associated education doctor program; 28 master degree programs, including 2 engineering research fields programs. At the same time, it awards master degree to those who have reached the required level.

The institute possesses a faculty of more than 1,400, in which 700 people specialize in educational science, 300 professors, associate professors or senior engineers. 49 young experts have made outstanding contributions to Hebei province even to the nation. Meanwhile, 120 academician from academy of science, academy of engineering or famous professors were appointed as our part-time professors.

Shijiazhuang Railway Institute is located in Shijiazhuang, the capital city of Hebei province, with Taihang Mountain on its west and Hebei plain on its east. It is the southern gate to the Capital of China---Beijing. Beijing-Guangzhou railway, Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan railway and Shijiazhuang-Dezhou railway meet here. It is 277 km away from Beijing. It takes only 2 hours to go to Beijing from Shijiazhuang by intercity express or expressway. All these make Shijiazhuang a city with convenient transportation and pleasant environment.
